If the protagonist and Emily/Evelyn take a 'break' he consoles the protagonist and even offers writing obscenities on Emily/Evelyn's Facenook wall, further showing his childish, though supportive nature. Mat can also be serious and supporting when necessary, when he notices that Jeff/Steve and Emily/Evelyn are getting close he immediately notifies the protagonist, fearing that they might have feelings for each other and that the protagonist should know. Mat being serious and comforting the protagonist once he and Emily take a 'break'. After Kelly breaks up with Mat, he becomes more mellow, though still retains his occasional goofy-ness.

Though he can take his teasing too far, as seen with Evelyn, who thought he was flirting with her when he didn't mean it. He is always goofing around and being the clown of the friend group as seen in his messages and photos. Mat is a very outgoing and funny person, even described as childish by the other characters. He was in a relationship with Kelly Struman and is romantically involved with Anna McKinley. Mathew Gursky, simply known as Mat, is one of the main characters of Emily Is Away <3.
